Basketball Game Preview: Brunswick Pirates vs. Statesboro Blue Devils

Brunswick and Statesboro are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2015, but not for long. The Brunswick Pirates will be playing at home against the Statesboro Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Brunswick will be strutting in after a win while Statesboro will be coming in after a loss.

Last Monday, Brunswick really took it to South Effingham for the full four quarters, racking up a 53-24 victory. The Pirates have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 13 matchups by 20 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Statesboro had to suffer through a 65-38 loss at the hands of Bradwell Institute. While losing is never fun, the Blue Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 227th, while the Tigers are ranked 34th).

Brunswick will have to keep a close watch on Gerziya Haggray and Kennedy Myers, a pair of players who had a big impact on Statesboro's prior game. Haggray went 5 for 11 en route to 16 points and eight boards, while Myers almost dropped a double-double on nine points and nine rebounds. What's more, Myers also racked up three steals, the most she's had since back in December of 2023.

Even though they lost, Statesboro smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in five consecutive games.

Brunswick is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 30 points. As for Statesboro, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-12.

Brunswick took their win against Statesboro in their previous meeting back in January by a conclusive 64-40. Will Brunswick repeat their success, or does Statesboro have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
