Baseball Game Preview: Vel Phillips Memorial Spartans vs. Monona Grove Silver Eagles

The Vel Phillips Memorial Spartans are taking a road trip to take on the Monona Grove Silver Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Vel Phillips Memorial took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They put the hurt on Madison West with a sharp 9-1 victory.

Caleb Liggon was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Ezra Liggon, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two RBI.

Meanwhile, Monona Grove waltzed into their game on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Everything went their way against the Wolves as they made off with a 7-1 win.

Monona Grove pushed their record up to 18-7 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Vel Phillips Memorial, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That somehow still isn't as good as their 17-5-1 record this season.

Vel Phillips Memorial came up short against Monona Grove in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, falling 7-2. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
