Recap: Somerset Academy South Homestead Hurricanes vs. Southridge Spartans
The Somerset Academy South Homestead Hurricanes fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Southridge Spartans on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 60-52 to the Spartans. It was the first time this season that Somerset Academy South Homestead let down their fans at home.
Somerset Academy South Homestead's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Joann Barnes, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Barnes pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Justice Sheppard, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds.
Shanaii Gamble was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 15 rebounds for Southridge. That makes it four consecutive games in which Gamble has scored at least a third of Southridge's points. Dianka Hardisson was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with six assists and four steals.
Somerset Academy South Homestead's defeat ended an eight-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-5. As for Southridge, their win bumped their record up to an identical 11-5.
Somerset Academy South Homestead will be playing in front of their home fans against Palmer Trinity at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Southridge's road trip will continue as they head out to face Lourdes Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 18th. Lourdes Academy is coming into the match hot, having won their last 11 games.
