Softball Recap: St. John's Takes a Loss

While it was St. John who put the first points on the board on Monday, it was Mission Vista who put up more. The St. John's Mavericks fell just short of Mission Vista by a score of 6-5. While the Mavericks didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating Mission Vista 4-0 in the first period.

Melanie Chen was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest earned runs she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.

In other batting news, Gabby Sherrill made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That triple was her first of the season.

Even though they lost, St. John's was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in six consecutive matches.

St. John's record now sits at 5-2-1. As for Mission Vista, the win snapped their losing streak at four games and leaves them with a 2-5 record.

Coming up, St. John's will welcome First Baptist Christian at 5:00 p.m. on March 18th. As for Mission Vista, they will head out to challenge Escondido Charter at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
