Basketball Game Preview: Las Plumas Thunderbirds vs. Corning Cardinals

Two dominant guards in T.J. Thompson and Jeff Mendros are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Las Plumas Thunderbirds will venture away from home to take on the Corning Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Las Plumas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 59 points per game this season.

Last Friday, Las Plumas earned a 54-42 victory over Oroville. Given the Thunderbirds' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 371st, while the Tigers are ranked 981st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Las Plumas' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Frankie Causey, who posted 12 points along with five boards and four blocks. The dominant performance gave Causey a new career-high in blocks. Another player making a difference was Casmir Jones, who had 12 points.

Meanwhile, Corning ended up a good deal behind Orland on Friday and lost 65-46. That's two games in a row now that the Cardinals have lost by exactly 19 points.

The victory made it two in a row for Las Plumas and bumps their season record up to 18-8. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.0 points over those games. As for Corning, their loss dropped their record down to 12-12.

Las Plumas came up short against Corning in their previous matchup back in January, falling 67-61. Can Las Plumas avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
