Preview: L.C. Bird Skyhawks vs. Powhatan Indians
L.C. Bird is 7-2 against Powhatan since December of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The L.C. Bird Skyhawks will head out on the road to face off against the Powhatan Indians at 6:00 p.m. Hopefully L.C. Bird focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up seven on Thursday.
L.C. Bird suffered their closest loss yet this season on Thursday. They fell just short of Midlothian by a score of 43-40. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as L.C. Bird came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 23rd, while Midlothian is ranked 86th).
Despite the loss, L.C. Bird saw an underclassman step up: Kylie Kent dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. Aliyah Elliott was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Powhatan suffered their biggest loss since November 27, 2023 on Thursday. They were dealt a 64-28 loss at the hands of Cosby. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss Powhatan has suffered against Cosby since December 3, 2019.
L.C. Bird's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-3. As for Powhatan, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-8 record this season.
Everything came up roses for L.C. Bird against Powhatan in their previous matchup back in November of 2023 as the squad secured a 72-26 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for L.C. Bird since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
