Preview: Cuero Gobblers vs. Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns

Cuero has enjoyed the comforts of home their last four games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will take on the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Cuero had no problem doing just that on Thursday. They put the hurt on Robinson with a sharp 24-3 win. Given Cuero's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 102nd, while Robinson is ranked 465th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mason Notaro was his usual excellent self, rushing for 97 yards and three touchdowns on only 13 carries.

Cuero's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB three times. Tyran Gamez was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two sacks himself.

Meanwhile, Hamshire-Fannett blew past Royal, posting a 57-7 victory on the road. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 42-7.

It was another big night for Chris Augustine, who rushed for 267 yards and five touchdowns on only 13 carries, and also picked up 32 receiving yards. Augustine really tore up the turf during one magnificent 78-yard run. The team also got some help courtesy of Ty Bryson, who threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns while completing 81% of his passes.

Cuero pushed their record up to 11-0 with that win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. They've been dominating during the contests in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 37 points. As for Hamshire-Fannett, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-1.

Cuero took their win against Hamshire-Fannett in their previous meeting back in November of 2022 by a conclusive 39-14. Does Cuero have another victory up their sleeve, or will Hamshire-Fannett turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
