Softball Game Preview: Superior Panthers vs. San Simon Longhorns

The Superior Panthers will challenge the San Simon Longhorns at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Superior has five straight victories, San Simon has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

18 must be Superior's lucky number: they beat Fort Thomas with that score not once but twice on Friday. The Panthers were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Apaches. Considering the Panthers have won eight games by more than nine runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Alyna Cruz made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-2. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Superior let Faith Denogean and Stephanie Lopez run wild. Denogean scored two runs and stole three bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances, while Lopez scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-5. Those three stolen bases gave Denogean a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lilliana Fritz, who scored three runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

Meanwhile, San Simon came up short against Duncan on Monday, falling 18-4.

San Simon's defeat dropped their record down to 1-9. As for Superior, their win bumped their record up to 10-5.
