Football Preview: Lockney Longhorns vs. Floydada Whirlwinds
Lockney hasn't had much luck against Floydada recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Lockney Longhorns are taking a road trip to square off against the Floydada Whirlwinds at 7:00 p.m.
Lockney is leaving town to face Floydada after disappointing their home crowd in their season opener. Lockney fell to West Texas 30-25.
Despite their defeat, Lockney saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Dyllan Thiebaud, who rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown on only five carries, and also threw for 114 yards and a touchdown, was perhaps the best of all. Thiebaud got the majority of those yards when he took off on a run and that went for an incredible60 yards. Daniel Alvarado got in on the action as well, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Lockney wouldn't let West Texas keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Lockney can thank Dahlen Silva and Alvarado for forcing both of them. Alvarado also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing a fumble and making three total tackles.
Meanwhile, Floydada had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They came out on top against Tulia by a score of 27-19 on Friday.
Floydada's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. It was truly a group effort as Eric Gonzalez, Sergio Valadez, and Tyrean Henderson picked up one apiece. Henderson's also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, forcing a fumble and making two total tackles in addition to snagging an interception.
Lockney lost to Floydada on the road by a decisive 35-21 margin in their previous matchup back in September of 2023. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Henderson, who rushed for 143 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 8.9 yards per carry, and also threw for 239 yards and a touchdown on only 19 passes.
