Maryville, the last team to beat Alcoa, took command after holding on downs and then getting a 15-yard TD pass from Robinette, to go ahead 20-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Alcoa quarterback D.J. Oggs (106 yards rushing) brought Alcoa back by returning the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. After another touchdown for Maryville (2-0), the reigning state 6A champion, Alcoa closed to 26-19 with 3 minutes left on a 9-yard TD run by JaRod Crenshaw.

But the Rebels recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. Shawn Prevo added a 16-yard TD run for the winners and Alcoa's Vanderbilt Hambrick finished with 24 carries and 107 yards and a touchdown.

This was a battle of Tennessee's two most successful programs from the last decade that are located less than 10 miles apart.

Maryville went 14-1 last season. Its only loss was to Alcoa, which finished 15-0 and won the 3A title. The Rebels opened the season with a 30-7 win over Webb as Robinette completed 12 of 14 for 136 yards and accounted for three touchdowns.

Alcoa was coming off a 21-0 win over Cleveland.

Saturday's win not only avenged the loss to Alcoa last year but assured Maryville's state-record 74-game win streak is secure for now.

No. 8 Pleasant Grove overcomes slow start

Quarterback Cody Demps helped his team overcome a slow start and a nagging injury to top running back Mark Jenkins to help host Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.) roll past cross-town rival Monterey Trail 35-6.

Demps threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as Pleasant Grove beat Monterey Trail for the seventh straight time.

Monterey Trail actually took a 6-0 lead before Pleasant Grove scored the final five touchdowns, including a 66-yard touchdown pass by Demps to close the scoring.

Grant (Sacramento, Calif.) score final 36 points to beat Folsom

With his team down 16-7 at halftime, Grant's highly-touted running back and defensive back Shaq Thompson went to work leading the Pacers to a resounding 43-16 home victory against the defending state Division II Bowl champion Folsom (Calif.).

Tanner Trosin, who replaced MaxPreps National Player of the Year Dano Graves at quarterback for Folsom, was lights out the first two quarters, throwing for 248 yards and two touchdowns. But he and his teammates were shut down in the second half, helping the Pacers avenge a bitter 41-20 to Folsom in last year's Sac-Joaquin Section finals.

Grant opened last season with a 49-14 win over Folsom.

Thompson, ranked the No. 39 recruit in the country by MaxPreps/CBS recruiting expert Tom Lemming, scored three touchdowns and set up a Terry Shine 3-yard TD with a 41-yard run. Kicker Charlie Vue added field goals of 35 and 46 yards for the Pacers.
