Basketball Game Preview: Lakewood Cougars vs. Sehome Mariners

Lakewood is 0-9 against Sehome since February of 2015 but things could change on Friday. The Lakewood Cougars will welcome the Sehome Mariners at 7:15 p.m. Lakewood will be strutting in after a victory while Sehome will be coming in after a loss.

Lakewood took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. Everything went their way against Bellingham as Lakewood made off with a 68-45 win.

Lakewood found their leader in sophomore Karly Stewart, who went 7 for 17 on her way to 19 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Stewart is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for four straight games. Janelle Bagtas was another key player, putting up nine points.

Lakewood smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in ten consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 59 points the game before, Sehome was a bit more limited in their matchup on Wednesday. They were outmatched by Lynden and fell 69-16. The game marked the Mariners' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Lakewood pushed their record up to 6-8 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 65.0 points per game. As for Sehome, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost six of their last seven matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Things could have been worse for Lakewood, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 72-54 loss to Sehome in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Can Lakewood avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
