As many questions as answers in 5A playoff scenarios; Jenks' Thompson claims top honors in Week 9; Sand Springs signal caller slings it (and can run, too).

Week 9 Large-School Player of the Week

Tramaine Thompson, Jenks – With all the offensive firepower featured in Oklahoma, Thompson is amongst the most exciting players in the entire state. In a crucial 34-6 win over Muskogee to clinch another district championship, Tramaine was the main man for the Trojans.

Thompson caught five passes for 113 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown grab from sophomore quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen. Thompson also added 69 rushing yards and two touchdowns on four carries and tacked on a 32-yard punt return to set up a field goal for good measure.

Thompson – a pint-sized rocket at 5-foot-8, 160 pounds – is committed to Oregon State. Speed kills and it appears the Beavers have found themselves a diamond in the rough. On the season, Thompson has caught 25 passes for 376 yards and five touchdowns in a balanced offensive attack and has added two punt returns for touchdowns while averaging 19.1 yards per return.

Past Honorees

Week 8 – Brady May, McAlester

Week 7 – Jerrod Green, Broken Arrow

Week 6 – Kyle Webster, Mustang

Week 5 – Shawn Jackson, Tulsa McLain

Week 4 – Soda Waltman, Owasso

Week 3 – Timothy Flanders, Midwest City

Week 2 – Javon Harris, Lawton MacArthur

Week 1 – Eric Bennett, Tulsa Washington

Honorable Mention

Eric Bennett, Tulsa Washington – Bennett wanted potential suitors of the Class 5A state title to remember that he is the one that drives the Washington wagon. After missing six games due to injury, Bennett returned to total 262 yards and five touchdowns in a 70-27 pounding of Skiatook. After spending two years in Class 6A, the Hornets are the top-ranked team in 5A with their only loss coming to Broken Arrow. With Bennett back to run the show, Booker T. Washington will be a tough out down the stretch.

Timothy Flanders, Midwest City – Flanders rushed for 212 yards and five touchdowns on 12 carries in a 45-7 win over Norman. Flanders scored on runs of 52, 20, 43, 5, and 43 yards all in the first half as the Bombers took a 45-0 halftime lead. Flanders is up to 1,625 yards and 27 rushing touchdowns, averaging 13.5 yards per carry.

Chris Perry, Stillwater – Perry capped a memorable week with a 43-23 win over Choctaw. After verbally committing to attend national power Oklahoma State on a wrestling scholarship, Perry rushed for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Choctaw. The win clinched a playoff berth for the Pioneers. Perry has rushed for 1,112 yards and 25 touchdowns this season.

Week 9 Storylines

Sand Springs QB Piling up Huge Numbers

Johnny Deaton’s offensive fireworks continued as Sand Springs flattened rival Sapulpa 48-13 to move to 6-3 on the season and more importantly, ensure postseason football for the emerging program.

Deaton – just a junior – totaled 341 yards of offense in the rout, including 194 yards and five rushing touchdowns. Deaton also threw for 147 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter for the Sandites. Deaton scored four straight rushing touchdowns from 15, 11, 7, and 61 yards before adding another from 12 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Sand Springs, which qualified for the postseason for the first time since 1997, rushed for 336 yards in the victory and totaled 229 yards and nine first downs en route to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.

Deaton has rushed for 1,449 yards and 17 touchdowns for Sand Springs and has 1,376 passing yards and nine scores.

Broken Arrow Still a Threat

Broken Arrow made huge headlines back in Week 1 with a victory over Tulsa Union. After falling off the wagon in back-to-back district losses to Muskogee and Jenks, the Tigers are getting their second wind.

In a Week 9, Broken Arrow hung a half-hundred on Claremore in the first half as the No. 5 Tigers took a 55-0 lead. Cale Fulps threw for three touchdowns, Steven Hopper rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries, and Jerald Green added 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Green, who entered the season as a returning starter for Broken Arrow, has been solid since his return from injury. Hopper has rushed for 17 touchdowns this season, part of it while spelling Green.

With Green’s return and Hopper still getting plenty of touches, it gives Broken Arrow a bona fide two-headed monster in the backfield.

With the potential of icy field turf looming as we inch closer to December, championship contenders will need a solid running game. You could argue Broken Arrow may have the best one in the state. Over the past two seasons, the state playoffs have been affected by wintry weather.

Might come in handy when the likes of Jenks, Union, and Muskogee see the Tigers down the road.

This and That

Bixby scored 38 first quarter points en route to a 55-0 halftime lead in a 68-0 win over Tulsa Rogers… Tulsa East Central junior Jaimon Gilstrap rushed for three touchdowns in a 26-7 win over McAlester… Despite trailing 6-0 to Northwest Classen at halftime, El Reno stormed back for a 21-6 win thanks to Jakell Everheart. Everheart scored three second half touchdowns to lead the comeback… Anthony Morales rushed for two scores in to lead Edmond Memorial to a 35-3 ‘Edlam’ win over Edmond North… Westmoore kept its fading playoff hopes alive as quarterback Stanley West accounted for 260 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Lawton Eisenhower.

What Game Will I Attend?

If you asked me right now, it looks like I will be heading to outer Oklahoma City to watch Javon Harris and Lawton MacArthur take on Oregon State verbal Dax Dilbeck and Edmond Deer Creek on Friday night. Why? See below (If you tried to figure out why twice in one night, you would know why it is not worth repeating).

If Scott Hansen could clone Scott Hansen, Scott Hansen (me) would send mini, cloned Scott Hansen to Bixby to take in Tulsa Washington and Bixby.

Or if you asked the original Scott Hansen on Thursday, he may end up going to Bixby any way.

Class 6A Playoff Scenarios

Clinched District Championship: Mustang (9-0, 6-0, 6A-1), Midwest City (9-0, 6-0, 6A-2), Jenks (9-0, 6-0, 6A-3), Tulsa Union (9-0, 6-0, 6A-4).

Clinched Second Place: Edmond Memorial (7-2, 5-1, 6A-2), Muskogee (6-3, 5-1, 6A-3).

Clinches Second Place with Win: Norman North (7-2, 5-2, 6A-1), Owasso (5-4, 5-1, 6A-4) or Stillwater (6-3, 5-1, 6A-4). In 6A-4, loser between Owasso and Stillwater falls to third place.

Clinched Third Place: Edmond Santa Fe (7-2, 5-2, 6A-1),

Clinched Fourth Place: Enid (7-2, 4-2).

Depends on What Happens:

District 6A-1: Putnam City North (6-3, 3-3) clinches fourth place with a win at Del City. If Putnam North loses to Del City and Lawton beats Norman North, Lawton goes to playoffs as fourth seed. If Putnam North and Lawton both win or lose, Putnam North goes through to the playoffs by virtue of 24-0 win in Week 9.

District 6A-2: Edmond North (4-5, 4-2), Westmoore (4-5, 3-3), and Putnam City (4-5, 3-3) are vying for third and fourth. Edmond North travels to Westmoore on Friday. If Edmond North wins, the Huskies will finish third while Westmoore falls out of the playoff race unless Putnam City loses to Edmond Memorial. Should Putnam City lose to Edmond Memorial and Westmoore lose to Edmond North, Putnam City would advance by virtue of a 7-3 win in Week 4.

Should Westmoore win and Putnam City win, there would be a three-way tie for third with all teams checking in at 4-3. It would then go down to district points. As of Week 9, Edmond North is plus-22, Westmoore is plus-9, and Putnam City is minus-10.

District 6A-3: Broken Arrow (7-2, 4-2) and Sand Springs (6-3, 4-2) will qualify, but are still fighting for third. Broken Arrow beat Sand Springs 49-16 on Oct. 16 and has a leg-up on third. However if Broken Arrow falls to Bartlesville and Sand Springs can upset Jenks, Sand Springs will finish third and face the second place team from 6A-4.

Class 5A Playoff Scenarios

Clinched District Championship: Carl Albert (8-1, 6-0, 5A-2), Coweta (7-2, 6-0, 5A-4).

Clinches District Championship With Win: Is there any game bigger than Class 5A No. 1 Tulsa Washington (8-1, 6-0) and No. 3 Bixby (7-2, 6-0) on Friday night to decide the District 6A-3 title? Both BTW and Bixby enter the mammoth game with 6-0 district records.

Clinched Second Place: Guthrie (8-1, 5-1, 5A-2), Tulsa East Central (7-2, 5-1, 5A-4).

Clinches Third Place With Win: The winner of Bishop Kelley (7-2, 4-2) and Miami (5-4, 4-2) clinches third while the loser falls to fourth in District 5A-3. Both teams have qualified for the playoffs already.

Clinched Third Place: Shawnee (7-2, 4-2, 5A-2), McAlester (4-5, 4-2, 5A-4).

Clinches Fourth Place with Win: Ardmore (6-3, 3-3) and Durant (5-4, 3-3) are fighting for their postseason lives in District 5A-2. The winner moves on, and the loser will be turning in their equipment on Monday morning.

Depends on What Happens:

District 5A-1:

MaxPreps.com never told me about being a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out. Okay, here goes nothing.

El Reno (7-2, 5-1) clinches the district title with a win. Edmond Deer Creek (7-2, 5-1) clinches second with a victory over Lawton MacArthur (7-2, 4-2). If El Reno should lose, it gets hairy at that point. With an El Reno loss and a Lawton MacArthur win, all three teams would be tied for first place in District 5A-1. It would then go down to district points. As of Week 9, El Reno had 66, Deer Creek had 60, and Lawton Mac had 42.

If Mac wins by 10 points or more and El Reno loses by 15 points or more in the event of a three-way tie, Mac would be the district champion depending on the margin of victory between El Reno and Duncan (5-4, 4-2). With a 15-point win over El Reno, Duncan enters the fray with 26 district points entering the weekend. If El Reno wins and Lawton Mac wins, Mac would finish second in the district by virtue of a head-to-head win over Deer Creek and Duncan would be eliminated unless Altus (5-4, 4-2) loses to Chickasha.

Get this, if Duncan would beat El Reno by 15 points or more, Lawton Mac beat Deer Creek by 10 points and Altus beat Chickasha (1-8, 1-5) by 15 points or more, the final tally would go as follows:

El Reno (7-3, 5-2, +51), Lawton MacArthur (8-2, 5-2, +52), Edmond Deer Creek (7-3, 5-2, +51), Duncan (6-4, 5-2, +41), and Altus (6-4, 5-2, +30). There would be a five-way tie for first according to district record. Altus, with just plus-30 district points, would stay home with a 5-2 record.

This sort of makes the BCS seem easy, doesn’t it?
