Basketball Recap: Mckenzie Drops Season-High Score on Elba

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask McKenzie). They breezed by the Elba Tigers to the tune of 80-31 on Thursday. Given McKenzie's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 195th, while Elba is ranked 416th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

McKenzie's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Devin Covan, who went 10 for 11 on his way to 25 points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Covan a new career-high in points. Quay Jackson was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 21 points and nine assists.

McKenzie pushed their record up to 9-3 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.8 points per game. As for Elba, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-8.

McKenzie won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Kinston at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Elba, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Elba Tigers face off against the Georgiana Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. One thing working in Georgiana's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten contests.
