MaxPreps 2014 All-Sac-Joaquin Section Football Teams

MaxPreps is honoring 2014's top players in California's Sac-Joaquin Section.

Performance during the 2014 season, stats provided to MaxPreps, local postseason honors and coach recommendations determined the selections.

Offensive Player of the Year

QB - Jake Browning, Senior, Folsom
The final numbers for his senior year were 360 of 524 for 5,796 yards, 91 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His career numbers are 1,191 for 1,708 with 16,781 yards, 229 TDs and 40 interceptions. Browning will go down as one of the top prep players in Sac-Joaquin history.



Defensive Player of the Year

DB - Jakob Magana, Senior, Downey (Modesto)
Since MaxPreps started keeping stats in 2004, no other Sac-Joaquin player has had more than 12 interceptions. This season Magana had 14, which was first in the state and second overall in the nation.

Athlete of the Year

ATH - Justice Shelton-Mosley, Senior, Capital Christian (Sacramento)
Shelton-Mosley was a huge reason why Capital Christian was 13-0 before falling to the eventual state champion Central Catholic. The Harvard commit had over 1,900 all purpose yards, six interceptions on defense and 29 total touchdowns.

Junior Player of the Year

RB - Deshawn Collins, Grant (Sacramento)
Collins had over 2,220 yards rushing for the Pacers. He was second in the section in total yards with 100-plus fewer attempts than the first-place rusher. Collins was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee.




Sophomore of the Year

RB - Chris Brown, Modesto Christian
Brown had 11 games this season in which he ran for more than 100 yards. In total, the Class of 2017 back rushed for 1,604 yards and 25 TDs. 

Coaches of the Year

Small - Phil Grams, Capital Christian (Sacramento)

Medium - Roger Canepa, Central Catholic (Modesto)
 
Large - Kris Richardson and Troy Taylor, Folsom

First Team Offense

WR - Cole Thompson, Senior, Folsom
Thompson set a state record with 34 touchdown receptions. He was only five shy of the national record for TDs in a season, which was set this year in Texas.

WR - Josiah Deguara, Senior, Folsom
Deguara led the section and state in receptions with 114. The senior hauled in 24 TDs and racked up 1,671 yards receiving.



WR - Damarrio Hammonds, Senior, Patterson
The Western Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player hauled in 65 catches for 1,164 yards and 18 TDs. In eight games he caught two or more touchdowns.

TE - Will Stabbert, Senior, Granite Bay
Stabbert was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee after catching 12 TDs for the Grizzlies.

OL - Cody Creason, Senior, Folsom
Creason was named the Sierra Foothill Lineman of the Year. He was a huge reason Folsom had such a high-powered offense.

OL - Darrin Paulo, Senior, Grant (Sacramento)
Paulo was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee. The 6-5, 300-pound guard has offers from Oregon, UCLA and USC, to name a few. 

OL - Jonah Williams, Junior, Folsom
The next QB in line for the Bulldogs will enjoy having Williams back for another year. The 6-5, 255-pound Williams is one of three Folsom offensive lineman named as all-SFL members.

OL - Johnny Capra, Senior, Placer (Auburn)
The Cal commit opened up holes for the Hillmen, who averaged over 44 points per game. As a team Placer rushed for 3,045 yards.



OL - Tristen Taylor, Senior, Stagg (Stockton)
The 6-7, 305-pound senior was named the San Joaquin Athletic Association Lineman of the Year. Taylor is committed to play at Eastern Washington.

QB - Noah Righetti, Senior, St. Mary's (Stockton)
Righetti was named the Black Hat Player of the Year for good reason. He connected on 169 passes for 2,845 yards and 32 TDs.

QB - Matt Jimison, Senior, Vista del Lago (Folsom)
Jimison and the Eagles averaged over 46 points per game. The senior was sixth in the section with 2,850 yards passing.

RB - Marcel Brown, Senior, Rio Linda
Brown averaged over 10 yards per carry for the Knights. If he wasn't getting the ball, he made defenses respect him, which allowed Rio Linda to pass for 1,995 yards on the year.

RB - Trey Nahhas, Senior, Monterey Trail (Elk Grove)
Nahhas was named the Sacramento Bee's Offensive Player of the Year. He led the section in total rushing yards with 2,599. He did this against some stiff Delta league defenses.

RB - Frankie Trent, Senior, Oakdale
Trent was named the Valley Oak League Player of the Year after Oakdale reached the NorCal D-II Bowl final. Oakdale does not enter stats on MaxPreps, so we are not clear on his final numbers. 

ATH - Trey Udoffia, Junior, Del Oro (Loomis)
The junior was a dual-threat player for the Golden Eagles. He had near 1,000 yards receiving on offense, 11 total touchdowns and three interceptions on defense.



K -Alejandro Godinez, Senior, Natomas (Sacramento)
Godinez will most likely be remembered for his 58-yard field goal this season. But the senior was clutch at more than just long field goals.

First Team Defense

DL - Sai Ta'amu, Senior, Elk Grove
The Elk Grove senior recorded 12 sacks this season and was named Delta Co-Defensive Player of the Year.

DL - Sam Whitney, Senior, Folsom
The Sacramento Bee's Defensive Player of the Year finished the season with 13 sacks. Whitney anchored an outstanding Folsom defense.

DL - Shane McDermott, Senior, St. Mary's (Stockton)
McDermott was an absolute beast for the St. Mary's defense. He finished the season with 15.5 sacks.

DL - Lonny Powell, Senior, Sacramento
Powell led the section with 22 sacks. He also had 36 tackles for loss this season.



LB - Chris Atteberry, Senior, Grant (Sacramento)
Atteberry was named Delta Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He finished with 149 tackles, four sacks and an interception.

LB - Cameron Smith, Senior, Granite Bay
The USC commit had another solid season for the Grizzlies. He finished with 148 tackles and four interceptions.

LB - Khalil Hodge, Senior, St. Mary's (Stockton)
Hodge seemed to be involved in every defensive play for the Rams. He led the section with 262 total tackles.

LB - Bailey Laolagi, Senior, Folsom
Laolagi finished off his high school career in style, as he returned a fumble for a TD on the last play during the Division I state bowl. He also had an interception in that game.

LB - Sam Whittingham, Senior, Folsom
Whittingham was another standout on the Bulldogs defense. Only two teams scored more than 15 points on Folsom during their 16-0 season.

DB - Manny Scott-Anderson, Senior, Elk Grove
The senior was impressive at both running back and defensive back. Scott-Anderson led his team in tackles and had 10.5 sacks.

DB - John Horn, Senior, Yuba City
Horn was second in the section and third in the state with 11 interceptions.



DB - Jacob Alvarado, Senior, Tracy
Alvarado had nine picks this season for Tracy. He also had 711 all purpose yards on offense.

DB - Larry Hardy, Senior, Inderkum (Sacramento)
Hardy was a pure playmaker on both sides of the ball for Inderkum. He rushed for over 1,000 yards and had six picks on defense.

P - Drew Rhodeman, Junior, Gregori (Modesto)
The junior was named first team all league in Modesto Metro Conference. He averaged 39 yards per punt.

Second Team Offense

WR - Jadin Battles, Senior, Mariposa County
Battles hauled in 88 receptions for 1,146 yards and eight TDs.

WR - Josh Bist, Senior, Ponderosa (Shingle Springs)
Bist caught 10 TDs and had 1,096 yards receiving for the Bruins.


WR - Daniel Tveretinov, Senior, Rosemont (Sacramento)
The Sierra Valley Conference Offensive MVP had 1,131 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns.



TE - Jared Rice, Senior, Central Catholic (Modesto)
Rice showed off his talent on the big stage. The senior had six catches for 76 yards and two scores during Central Catholic's state title win over St. Margaret's.

OL - George Uribe, Senior, Vista del Lago (Folsom)
Uribe was named Outstanding Lineman in the Capital Athletic League. He helped protect one of the section's top offenses. 

OL - Josh Tui, Senior, Pacheco (Los Banos)
Tui was a rock on both sides of the ball for Pacheco. He was all-league as both an offensive and defensive lineman.

OL - Zerek Saldivar, Senior, Sonora
Saldivar was the Mother Lode Lineman of the Year. Sonora went 11-2 on the season.

OL - Nick Brand, Junior, Del Campo (Fair Oaks)
Brand was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year in the Capital Valley Conference.

OL - Soape Tupou, Junior, Grant (Sacramento)
Tupou was named first team All-Metro by the Sacramento Bee. Grant will have the 6-4, 330-pound lineman for one more season.



QB - Caden Voges, Junior, Sacramento
The junior was second behind Browning in total passing yards with 4,294. He also threw for 56 TDs.

QB - Paul Wilson, Senior, Downey (Modesto)
Wilson was fifth in the section with 2,901 yards passing. He also rushed for 590 yards and 15 TDs.

RB - Justin Rice, Junior, Central Catholic (Modesto)
The junior was named the Black Hat Football Offensive Player of the Year. Rice ran for almost 1,000 yards during the Raiders' state title run.

RB - Tim Rawlins, Senior, Colfax
Rawlins will go down as one of Colfax's all-time best running backs. He finished with 1,861 yards and 35 TDs.

RB - Beau Bisharat, Junior, Jesuit (Carmichael)
Bisharat had a stellar junior year for Jesuit. He had over 2,000 all purpose yards and was named a first team All-Metro selection by the Sacramento Bee.

ATH - Serge Kiriluk, Senior, Sonora
Kiriluk was voted the Mother Lode League's top football player. He started both ways for Sonora. He had over 600 yards rushing and 95 tackles on defense.

K - Fernando Esparza, Sophomore, El Dorado (Placerville)
Esparza made 33 of his 36 PAT kicks and had a long of 45 yards for the Cougars, who finished the regular season undefeated.



Second Team Defense

DL - Chase Hatada, Junior, Rocklin
The junior was named was named first team All-Sierra Foothill League.

DL - Will Gallo, Senior, Modesto
Gallo was fourth in the section with 18.5 sacks.


DL - Lukas Hendricks, Senior, Folsom
Another outstanding athlete on the Folsom defense, Hendricks finished with nine sacks.

DL - Joshua Johnson, Senior, Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove)
Johnson was named Outstanding Defensive Lineman in the Capital Valley Conference. He finished with 12 sacks.

LB - Armondo Glinton, Senior, Cosumnes Oaks (Elk Grove)
Glinton was named Capital Valley Conference League MVP as a linebacker.



LB - Conner Dowd, Senior, Modesto Christian
Dowd was named the Trans Valley League Defensive Player of the Year. He finished with 194 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

LB - Trevon Mccray, Senior, Sierra (Manteca)
McCray was named the Valley Oak League Defensive Player of the Year. He was the rock in the middle of Sierra's defense.

LB - Jim Carter, Senior, El Camino (Sacramento)
The Capital Athletic League Defensive MVP finished the season with 13 tackles for loss.

LB - John Voter, Senior, Bear River (Grass Valley)
Voter had over 100 tackles and also rushed for 804 yards. He was a big reason why Bear River won a section title.

DB - Ben Hart, Senior, Del Oro (Loomis)
Hart was a first team All-Sierra Foothill League selection. He had eight interceptions.

DB - Mister Harriel, Senior, Antelope
Harriel did it all for Antelope. He was named the Utility Player of the Year in the Capital Valley Conference.

DB - Kiel Brown, Senior, Napa
Brown was named Player of the Year in the Monticello Empire League. He was solid on both sides of the ball.



DB - Jabar Byrd, Senior, Merced
Byrd was named the Central California Conference Player of the Year. He was one of the section's top running and defensive backs.

P - Keith Cantrell, Senior, Bret Harte (Angels Camp)
Cantrell was named first team all league in the Mother Lode League. He averaged 37.5 yards per kick.
