Softball Recap: Beacon Bulldogs vs. Spackenkill Spartans
Beacon had lost three straight at home, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 1-8 to make it four. They came up short against the Spackenkill Spartans, falling 20-6. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Spartans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 17-5 on April 8th.
Meg Nicholson was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Drew Kelly also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
As for Spackenkill, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 6-3. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Spackenkill's side, Addison Whitted and Cadie Hanaburgh were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Whitted pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Hanaburgh tossed three innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Whitted has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single hit in three consecutive appearances. At bat, Whitted went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles, while Hanaburgh went 3-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Those three hits gave Whitted a new career-high.
In other batting news, Cora Polakowski was a standout: she went 2-for-5 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ava Brandenburg, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double.
Looking ahead, Beacon will host Chester at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Spackenkill, they will face off against New Paltz at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Huguenots have averaged an impressive 9.5 runs per game this season.
