Basketball Recap: Kearns Cougars vs. Hunter Wolverines

Kearns was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They fell 40-33 to the Hunter Wolverines. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wolverines this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 48-44 back in January.

Despite the loss, Kearns saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Lia Benson posted 16 points and five steals. Benson is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Lindsey Tafili, who had three points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Hunter to victory, but perhaps none more so than Grace Gallagher, who almost dropped a triple-double with nine points, 12 boards, and ten blocks. That's the most blocks Gallagher has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kiana Pauni, who shot 4-for-6 from deep and dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.

Kearns' defeat dropped their record down to 8-13. As for Hunter, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-13 record this season.

Kearns has already played their next contest, a 59-38 loss against West Jordan on the 18th. As for Hunter, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 42-27 defeat against Taylorsville on the 18th.
