Baseball Game Preview: Newport Grizzlies vs. Davenport Gorillas

For the second straight game, Newport will face off against Davenport. The Grizzlies will challenge the Gorillas at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Newport has five straight wins, Davenport has ten straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Newport had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 15-run drubbing they dealt Davenport on Tuesday. The Grizzlies blew past the Gorillas 16-1. The result was nothing new for the Grizzlies, who have now won five matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.

Ryder Riddles made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI.

In other batting news, Mason Wink was a standout: he scored two runs while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Hank Kirkwood was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Newport always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .703. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Newport's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-2. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.6 runs on average over those games. As for Davenport, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
