Basketball Recap: St. Petersburg Picks Up Third Consecutive Victory

St. Petersburg had won two straight games and Shaw Summer did her part to make it three on Friday. The St. Petersburg Green Devils escaped with a win against the Sunlake Seahawks by the margin of a single free throw, 66-65 thanks in part to Summer, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 17 rebounds. Her evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points.

Shaniya Cooper was another key player, dropping a double-double on 12 points and 19 boards. Those 19 rebounds gave her a new career-high.

When it comes to explaining why Sunlake lost, don't look at Kaycie Hyde. Despite the final result, she posted 19 points and seven steals. Hyde is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 18 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Cherity Powells, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten boards.

St. Petersburg has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.5 points per game. As for Sunlake, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 14-6.

St. Petersburg didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 68-29 win against Dunedin on the 27th. Sunlake has also already played their next game, a 68-62 defeat against Wesley Chapel on the 28th.
