Cedar Hill boys beat Duncanville in basketball; Boyd swimmers dominate.

The Wakeland (Frisco) boys soccer team was going to take last weekend off to get ready for the long season ahead. But when Wakeland coach Rusty Oglesby and his players learned that defending Class 5A state champ Jesuit would be part of the Duncanville Kickoff Classic, they decided they could squeeze in some more matches.

"It's a chance to see how we measure up," Oglesby said before the tournament.

Wakeland, last year's 4A state champ, measured up well. Wakeland won the Kickoff Classic, and that included a 2-1 shootout win over Jesuit in the semifinals.

Wakeland (7-0) beat Jesuit after Nick Petolick, who was named the 4A MVP at last year's state tournament, saved two shootout attempts. Petolick made four straight saves in the shootout of last year's state title game against Humble Kingwood.

There was no state title involved against Jesuit, but it was still a huge game.

"This is our Euless Trinity vs. Southlake Carroll," Oglesby told The Dallas Morning News.

Oglesby was referring to the football game in 2006 that matched defending state champions Euless Trinity and Southlake Carroll. That game drew 46,339 fans to Texas Stadium.

Jesuit was ranked No. 1 in 5A and Wakeland No. 1 in 4A in the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches' preseason rankings.

CEDAR HILLS WINS DISTRICT 5-5A HOOPS SHOWDOWN WITH DUNCANVILLE
Led by its pressure defense and 15 points from guard Billy Johnson, Cedar Hill pulled away for a 54-44 victory over its neighbor and rival, Duncanville. The win gave Cedar Hill (23-2, 7-0 in District 5-5A), which is No. 4 in the Class 5A state rankings, sole possession of first place in the district. Cedar Hill has won two straight district titles and was the 5A state runner-up in 2009. Duncanville won district titles in 2007 and 2008 and was the 5A champion in '07.

TOP PERFORMERS
Two of the area's outstanding performances from the last week:

* Haley Texada, Frisco Wakeland girls basketball: The senior guard, who is orally committed to Kansas State, scored 34 points in a 72-47 win over Frisco. She's averaging 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

* Taylor Stell, Lake Highlands boys basketball: In two games last week, the senior forward combined to score 53 points and grab 33 rebounds. He's averaging 15.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

MCKINNEY BOYD SWIMMERS SWEEP DISTRICT TITLES
The Plano schools have a long history of success in the pool, but Boyd (McKinney) beat all three of them (Plano, Plano East and Plano West) to claim this year's District 8-5A boys and girls swimming and diving titles. The Boyd girls were led by Kristen Crawford, who was named the meet's top diver, and Kayla DeBoer, who was named the top swimmer. Boyd's boys team also had the meet's top diver, Shawn Birk, and top swimmer, David Shelton.
