Softball Game Preview: Penfield Patriots vs. Our Lady of Mercy Monarchs

The Penfield Patriots will challenge the Our Lady of Mercy Monarchs at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Penfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.6 runs per game this season.

Penfield will bounce into Thursday's match after beating Victor, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Patriots came out on top against the Blue Devils by a score of 8-5 on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Patriots.

Penfield let Stephanie Coughlin and Vivian Russo run wild. Coughlin went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Russo got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Coughlin is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Malley, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Penfield was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Victor only posted a batting average of .222.

Meanwhile, Our Lady of Mercy hadn't done well against Brighton recently (they were 0-3 in their previous three matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Monarchs narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Bruins 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Monarchs have posted since April 27, 2024.

Our Lady of Mercy's win was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-2. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games. As for Penfield, their win bumped their record up to 3-5.

Penfield couldn't quite finish off Our Lady of Mercy when the teams last played back in April of 2023 and fell 5-3. Can the Patriots avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
