Football Game Preview: San Marcos Rattlers vs. Canyon Cougars

The San Marcos Rattlers are taking a road trip to square off against the Canyon Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

Last Friday, San Marcos was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 27-21 to Steele. While losing is never fun, the Rattlers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 149th, while the Knights are ranked 38th).

San Marcos might have lost, but man, Justin Tardy was a machine: he rushed for 100 yards and one touchdown on only ten carries. The Rattlers are 4-2 when Tardy posts 100 or more rushing yards, but 1-2 otherwise. Henry Harris got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Canyon played a tough contest on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 49-7 loss at the hands of Steele. The game marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

San Marcos' loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Canyon, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 5-4.

San Marcos took a serious blow against Canyon when the teams last played back in November of 2024, falling 52-7. Can the Rattlers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
