Basketball Recap: Heritage Takes a Loss

Heritage fought the good fight in their overtime match against Colorado Academy on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Colorado Academy Mustangs by a score of 52-50. The Eagles' loss continues a trend for the team, making it five in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Heritage lost, don't look at Skylar Peterson. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine rebounds. Those 19 points gave Peterson a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Naomi Sanchez, who posted 13 points.

Even though they lost, Heritage smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Colorado Academy to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hannah Smith, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 13 boards. Smith has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. Anna Johnson was another key player, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Heritage's defeat dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Colorado Academy, they pushed their record up to 8-8 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.

It'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Heritage Eagles face off against the Highlands Ranch Falcons at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Colorado Academy, they will venture away from home to challenge Dakota Ridge at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
