Baseball Recap: Cox Mill Comes Up Short

Cox Mill extended their losing streak to 11 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 6-13 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the South Iredell Vikings. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last eight times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

John Ingle was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. He is becoming a predictor of Cox Mill's success: when he posts at least ten strikeouts the team is 2-1 (and 4-12 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Tyler Hicks made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sean Roman, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.

As for South Iredell, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 16-6. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch.

On South Iredell's side, Luke Snell looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Snell has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Reid Johnson was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cox Mill will square off against Providence at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for South Iredell, they will challenge West Rowan at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Falcons' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Vikings' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
