Less than three days before his 59th birthday, Rockhurst head football coach Tony Severino found himself a little too close to the action in a 21-14 win over rival Blue Springs.

Trying to avoid contact on a tackle that was being made on the Rockhurst sideline, Severino was backing away from a tight spot when he sustained the injury to his right knee in the third quarter. Severino was never actually hit on the play. He had surgery to repair a separated quadriceps muscle that tore away from his kneecap Saturday morning.

"The only thing I remember is going down and looking at the kneecap not being in the right place," Severino told the Kansas City Star Monday. "It was kind of a freakish thing. I was hurting like crazy, but I feel pretty good about how things turned out."

Severino stayed on the sideline and coached the Hawklets to victory Friday, inspiring his quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase who completed 11 of 16 passes for 228 yards in the win.

"I didn't know if I could do it without (Severino)," Scheelhaase told the Star. "He said the only way he was going to leave me was if he was dead. He said he was going to be there with me until the end. He coached one of the greatest second halves I've ever seen.

"Severino will coach from the press box Friday when Rockhurst hosts Liberty.
