Football Recap: Arroyo Dons vs. Burlingame Panthers
After flying high against Washington last Saturday, Arroyo came back down to earth. The Dons had to suffer through a 50-22 loss at the hands of the Burlingame Panthers. The defeat continues a trend for the Dons in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost three in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Arroyo lost on Friday, don't look at Rodney Roy. Despite the final result, he picked up 97 receiving yards and one TD. Roy didn't just play on offense: he also made two total tackles and defended one pass in addition to snagging an interception which he returned one-yard for a touchdown.
Arroyo didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Roy and Joshua Dickerson. Arroyo got some further help from Jason Cordova: he picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made seven total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Hayden Haba had a dynamite game For Burlingame., rushing for 225 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per carry, and also catching one score. Haba was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 61 yards. Will Armstrong was another key player, picking up 112 receiving yards and one TD.
Arroyo's loss dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Burlingame, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-1.
Arroyo and Burlingame could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Dons (ranked 719th) will meet Livermore (ranked 262nd) at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Burlingame will square off against Los Gatos at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (392 vs. 58).
