Baseball Recap: Mayfield Comes Up Short

If Mayfield was feeling good fresh off their 15-0 takedown of Mekeel Christian Academy on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Panthers took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Wolves on Friday. The Panthers haven't had much luck with the Wolves recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Cubby Roth (C) put in work no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs.

Roth (C) wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Landon Conyne, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases. Patrick Allen also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

Mayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, they picked up their first road win, bumping their record up to 2-5.

Looking ahead, Mayfield will face off against Corinth at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Riverhawks have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.55 runs per game on average), something the Panthers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville, they will challenge Fort Plain at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
