Baseball Recap: River Falls Comes Up Short

River Falls had lost three straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped down to 7-5 to make it four. They fell just short of the New Richmond Tigers by a score of 5-4. The Wildcats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Tigers earlier this season, when they won 6-2.

As for New Richmond, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since April 16th.

For New Richmond's part, Truman Weiss spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and three unearned) runs on six hits and racked up eight Ks. Those eight strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Weiss.

On the hitting side, Brady Sempf was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April. Christian Messer also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. River Falls will host Cumberland at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. As for New Richmond, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Somerset at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
