Recap: Hays Hawks vs. Canyon Cougars

The Hays Hawks lost against the Canyon Cougars back in October of 2022, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Hays took a 36-18 bruising from Canyon. While losing is never fun, Hays can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 645th, while Canyon is ranked 260th).

Tyler McInvale threw for 179 yards while completing 82.4% of his passes. Hayden Jackson was his top target, picking up 52 receiving yards and no touchdowns. On the ground, Kaiden Richason rushed for 48 yards.

Canyon's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jackson Regan, who picked up 81 receiving yards and a touchdown, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Reece Deitrick, who threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns.

Canyon's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB five times. Leading the way was Tate Box and his two sacks.

This is the second loss in a row for Hays and nudges their season record down to 3-4. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 6-1 Boerne-Champion (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 71.4% over those games). As for Canyon, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hays will face off against Seguin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Canyon, they will head out on the road to face off against Lehman on Friday. Lehman is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.
