Baseball Game Preview: Jefferson Mustangs vs. Highlands Owls

Jefferson has gone a perfect 10-0 against Highlands recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Saturday. The Mustangs will welcome the Owls at 12:00 p.m. Jefferson is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.

If Jefferson beats Highlands with 13 runs on Saturday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two contests with that exact score. The Mustangs didn't even let Lanier on the board on Thursday, marking the Mustangs' second-straight 13-0 shutout. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Gabriel Benavidez and Nick Valle did most of the damage at the plate: Benavidez went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Valle got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Benavidez is becoming a predictor of Jefferson's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-1-1 (and 7-8 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Dylan Caffey, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Jefferson was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. They are 10-2-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Highlands came up short against Burbank on Thursday and fell 7-3.

Jefferson's win bumped their record up to 14-9-1. As for Highlands, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight matchups. That lines up perfectly with their 6-18 record this season.

Everything went Jefferson's way against Highlands in their previous meeting back in March, as Jefferson made off with a 10-3 victory. Will the Mustangs repeat their success, or do the Owls have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
