Volleyball Recap: Newtown Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Masuk

Newtown faced Masuk in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Monday. The Nighthawks took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Panthers. The loss continues a trend for the Nighthawks in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost six in a row.

While Newtown ultimately came up short, they didn't go down without a fight: they scored at least 18 points in every set they played. The final score came out to 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Nate Twitchell paced Newtown's offense, picking up 13 kills. Twitchell got some help from Dima Frunza and his 26 assists. Finally, Cole Sgagliardich kept Newtown's defense grounded, leading the team with three blocks.

Masuk can attribute much of their success to Jack Hanna, who had six digs and two aces. That's the most aces Hanna has posted since back in April.

Newtown's defeat dropped their record down to 12-4. As for Masuk, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 12-4.

Newtown wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 3-0 loss against Shelton on the 13th. As for Masuk, they will face off against Kolbe-Cathedral at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
