Baseball Recap: George Washington Takes a Loss

After flying high against Harrison last Tuesday, George Washington came back down to earth. The Patriots lost 16-5 to the Northfield Nighthawks on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Nighthawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-4 back in March.

Diego Varela put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one double.

Varela wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Luke Wiederholt, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

George Washington's loss dropped their record down to 5-4. As for Northfield, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 6-1.

George Washington wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, a 9-3 defeat against Standley Lake on the 9th. As for Northfield, they have also already played their next match, a 12-2 victory against Summit on the 9th.
