Football Game Preview: Powell Panthers vs. Campbell County Cougars

The Powell Panthers will take on the Campbell County Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Powell has five straight wins, Campbell County has ten straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

It was a proper cat-fight when Powell duked it out with Knoxville Central on Friday. The Panthers walked away with a 42-35 victory over the Bobcats.

Deuce Rodgers produced another solid effort rushing for 231 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 10.5 yards per carry, and also throwing for 236 yards and a pair of TDs on only 16 passes. Those 231 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Powell's leading receiver Zi Jackson was Rodgers' top target yet again, picking up 145 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Powell proved: they limited Knoxville Central to a paltry 3.2 yards per carry. The team can thank Isaias Amador for the heroic effort on defense: he. Powell didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 8.2.

Powell's defensive line didn't let Kaden Long, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. Joshua Kay was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up three himself. Iverson Garcia was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, making nine total tackles, and defending one pass.

Meanwhile, Campbell County scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They were outmatched by Clinton and fell 53-15.

Campbell County's defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Powell, their win bumped their record up to 5-0.

Everything went Powell's way against Campbell County when the teams last played back in October of 2022, as Powell made off with a 58-36 victory. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
