Baseball Recap: Hiawatha Comes Up Short

Hiawatha extended their losing streak to six on Monday, dropping their season record down to 6-12-1 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Nemaha Central Thunder. The Red Hawks were not able to make up for their defeat to the Thunder from their previous meeting back in April of 2024.

Xavier Oldham made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Karson Henry, who went 2-for-3 with one run.

As for Nemaha Central, their record now sits at 12-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted against Hiawatha since April 18, 2022.

On Nemaha Central's side, Evan Olberding made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Olberding was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Jack Macke was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaden Peterson, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

While Hiawatha had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair will be back at it again later today.
