Baseball Recap: Thursday's Loss Ends Newton-Conover's Winning Streak

Newton-Conover dropped their record down to 11-6 on Thursday, which also ended the team's eight-game streak of wins. They lost 10-4 to the Maiden Blue Devils. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

As for Maiden, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games.

For Maiden's part, Collin Chappel was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Chappel has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Ethan Whittaker was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Zane Williams was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newton-Conover will take on Foard in a tournament on Monday. The Red Devils are facing the Tigers at the right time seeing as the Tigers are stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Maiden, they will challenge Hickory at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Both teams are headed into the matchup with plenty of momentum (the Blue Devils have won seven straight at home, while the Red Tornadoes won three straight on the road), something that'll have to change.
