Basketball Recap: Soroco Comes Up Short

Soroco lost against West Grand back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Soroco Rams had to suffer through a 49-16 loss at the hands of the West Grand Mustangs. While losing is never fun, the Rams can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 229th, while the Mustangs are ranked 88th).

West Grand's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Makaila Gifford led the charge by putting up 15 points along with seven steals and five assists. Gifford has been hot for a while, having posted three or more steals the last 11 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Sara Lechman, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 boards.

Soroco has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season. As for West Grand, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-1.

Soroco will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Rangely at 2:30 p.m. on January 11, 2025. West Grand will also get a bit of a break before their next contest: they'll face off against Caprock Academy at 6:00 p.m. on January 10, 2025. West Grand's defense has only allowed 23 points per game this season, so Caprock Academy's offense will have their work cut out for them.
