Basketball Recap: South Aiken Triumphs

It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but South Aiken ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Gilbert Indians, sneaking past 45-42. The score was all tied up 18-18 at the break, but the Thoroughbreds were the better team in the second half.

Jasmine Epps was nothing short of spectacular: she dropped a double-double on 20 points and 19 rebounds. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Myracle Culbreath, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds.

South Aiken smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.

Despite the loss, Gilbert saw an underclassman step up: freshman Blythe Price dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 35.7% of Gilbert's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Alexis Gartmon was another key player, putting up 16 points and five assists.

South Aiken's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 6-5. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.7 points per game. As for Gilbert, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-11.

South Aiken wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 42-20 defeat against North Augusta on the 9th. As for Gilbert, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 42-39 victory against Midland Valley on the 9th.
