Softball Recap: Downey Takes a Loss

Downey had lost five straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 5-8 to make it six. They came up short against the Pitman Pride, falling 16-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pride this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-8 back in March.

As for Pitman, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 8-7 record this season. With that victory, they brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.

For Pitman's part, Juliet Jimenez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Jimenez was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one double. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 1.1 stolen bases per game.

In other batting news, Kaylee Fuller and Tatiana Rios did most of the damage at the plate: Fuller got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Rios went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Those three stolen bases gave Fuller a new career-high. Keanna Haro was another key player, going 1-for-5 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run.

Looking ahead, Downey will take on Johansen at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Pitman, they will be taking part in a tournament against Mercy at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
