Updated: The Top 10 recruiting classes on National Signing Day

With most of the recruiting action coming to a close around the country, the national team rankings are starting to solidify.

While the Top 10 is certainly still subject to change, particularly with No. 1 recruit Jadeveon Clowney still yet to sign, here's a look at the current Top 10 teams and why they finished so high.


1. Alabama
Top recruits: Brent Calloway, Ha'sean Clinton-Dix, Demetrius Hart, Cyrus Kouandjio
Breakdown: Clinton-Dix and Jabriel Washington add to an already-stacked Alabama secondary. National Signing Day surprises Calloway and Jeff Pagan boost the defensive line and linebacker group, respectively. Phillip Ely is a polished quarterback with the potential to master Saban's offense.

2. Notre Dame
Top recruits: Stephon Tuitt, Aaron Lynch, Ishaq Williams
Breakdown: Brian Kelly made defense a priority in this recruiting cycle, and he delivered in a big way for the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame's trio of Tuitt, Lynch and Williams is tops at the defensive end position in the country, while Ben Councell and Chase Hounshell add depth to the position. Quarterback Everett Golson was built for an offense like Brian Kelly's and will fit in perfectly.

3. Florida State
Top recruits: James Wilder, Nick O'Leary, Karlos Williams, Tim Jernigan
Breakdown: Put simply, this is an outstanding class, featuring outstanding talent across the board. Jimbo Fisher dipped into fertile recruiting pockets across the state to secure commitments from top recruits in Dade, Broward, Polk and Palm Beach counties. Outside of quarterback, this class has an elite recruit at each position.

4. LSU
Top recruits: Anthony Johnson, La'el Collins, Kenny Hilliard
Breakdown: LSU was quiet on National Signing Day, but that's because the Tigers made most of their noise months ago locking up most of the Bayou State's top players early on in the recruiting cycle. Johnson is arguably the top defensive tackle in the country, while Collins, the nation's No. 7 recruit, is hard to top on the offensive line. LSU's big news of the day was positive, as Evangel Christian defensive end Jermauria Rasco signed with the Tigers.

5. Clemson
Top recruits: Tony Steward, Stephone Anthony, Mike Bellamy
Breakdown: This may be the biggest story of the recruiting season, as Dabo Swinney has landed an elite class despite finishing with a losing record. Steward and Anthony comprise the top linebacker unit in the nation, while Sammy Watkins and Charone Peake are among the top wide receiver duos. Bellamy, who flirted with a number of other schools, stuck with Clemson and will eventually assume a C.J. Spiller-like role in the Tigers' offense.

6. Georgia
Top recruits: Jay Rome, Isaiah Crowell, Ray Drew
Breakdown: It may have taken a while for this class to come together, but for Georgia fans, it was certainly worth the wait. Rome, Crowell, and Drew give Mark Richt one of the nation's top recruits at three different positions. With Sterling Bailey, Damian Swann, and Malcolm Mitchell also in the fold, Georgia's Dream Team has become a reality.

7. USC
Top recruits: Lamar Dawson, Tre Madden, Max Wittek
Breakdown: This Trojans class blends top kids from Southern California with nice pick-ups from out of state, demonstrating that Lane Kiffin refuses to be phased by NCAA sanctions. Dawson was a National Signing Day surprise, while Wittek, Madden, and George Farmer have been been Trojans pledges for months. This is a Pete Carroll-esque class, one that Trojan fans will be happy with

8. Ohio State
Top recruits: Braxton Miller, Curtis Grant, Michael Bennett
Breakdown: This is the clear-cut top haul in the Big Ten. While Miller will receive most of the hype in the offseason, Grant could be the player that pushes for early playing time, as the Buckeyes graduate several linebackers that saw significant action. Grant, Ron Tanner, and Jeremy Cash give Ohio State a talent-laden secondary. Next year's recruiting class could be even stronger.

9. Auburn
Top recruits: Christian Westerman, Kiehl Frazier, Kris Frost
Breakdown: With Erique Florence and Jonathan Rose, the Tigers' secondary is strong. Frazier is a difference-maker behind center, with Jaylon Denson and Brandon Fulse providing solid targets. Grabbing Kris Frost away from Michigan will pay major dividends; he's a gifted athlete who was extremely productive for North Carolina-power Butler.






10. Texas
Top recruits: Malcolm Brown, Steve Edmond, Josh Turner
Breakdown: Save for Christian Westerman, this is the exact class that Texas was hoping for. The Longhorns got who they believe was the state's top running back in Malcolm Brown, along with Edmond, the state's top linebacker, and Cedric Reed, an impressive defensive end. Keep an eye on Jaxon Shipley, Jordan's younger brother. He hasn't gotten the same level of attention as other recruits in this class, but could up having the biggest impact.
