Football Recap: Sumner Starts Season with Win at Home

Sumner gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They walked away with a 27-17 win over the Bartram Trail Bears. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Stingrays' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 113th, while the Bears are ranked 34th).

A big part of Sumner's win came down to the chemistry between Antonio Balaguer and his top target Taesean Robinson. Balaguer threw for 205 yards and two TDs while Robinson picked up 161 receiving yards. The dominant performance also gave Balaguer a new career-high in rushing yards (64).

Sumner didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Robert Garcia and Tyler Lynch.

When it comes to explaining why Bartram Trail lost, don't look at Arthur Lewis. Despite the final result, he rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown, and also picked up 40 receiving yards.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sumner will venture away from home to take on Armwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Bartram Trail, they will head out to square off against Ponte Vedra at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
