Basketball Game Preview: West Springfield Spartans vs. Woodson Cavaliers

West Springfield is 1-9 against Woodson since January of 2020 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The West Springfield Spartans will host the Woodson Cavaliers at 5:45 p.m.

On Friday, West Springfield lost to South County on the road by a 67-53 margin. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 295th, while the Stallions are ranked 69th).

Meanwhile, Woodson had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.5 points) and they went ahead and made it seven on Friday. Everything went their way against the Bruins as they made off with a 74-48 victory. The Cavaliers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 20 points or more this season.

Woodson found their leader in sophomore Kaylen Chilton, who went 8 of 15 on his way to 19 points and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kollin Morgan, who posted 11 points and five blocks.

Woodson's win bumped their record up to 9-2. As for West Springfield, their loss dropped their record down to 3-7.

West Springfield and Woodson were neck-and-neck in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, but West Springfield came up empty-handed after a 41-40 defeat. Can West Springfield avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
