Wabash is a perfect 7-0 against Caston since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Apaches will host the Comets at 5:30 p.m.
Wabash fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Bluffton on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 5-4 to the Tigers, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Apaches have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Wabash saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dominic Baker, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Derek Reed also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Caston made easy work of Argos on Tuesday and carried off an 18-1 win. Considering the Comets have won three contests by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Carson Harness made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, Drew McGrew was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (three). Parker Zimpleman was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Caston always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .578. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Argos only posted an OBP of .118.
The victory made it two in a row for Caston and bumps their season record up to 5-2. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.5 runs over those games. As for Wabash, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Wabash has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Caston struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.3 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Everything went Wabash's way against Caston in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Wabash made off with a 16-3 victory. Do the Apaches have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Comets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
