Basketball Recap: Willcox Takes a Loss

Willcox has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 63-62 heartbreaker at the hands of the St. David Tigers. The Cowboys lost against the Tigers in their previous head to head back in December of 2021, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 57-22 score last time.

Despite the loss, Willcox still got an impressive performance from Addison Burright, who almost dropped a triple-double on 12 points, 18 rebounds, and nine assists. The dominant performance gave Burright a new career-high in assists. Paislee Adams was another key player, putting up 14 points and eight boards.

Even though they lost, Willcox smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 33 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. David only pulled down 18 offensive rebounds.

St. David's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gracey Crockett, who posted 16 points in addition to eight steals and six rebounds. Crockett is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed three or more in the last 11 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Hart, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten boards.

Willcox's defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 12-5. As for St. David, they pushed their record up to 11-8 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Willcox has already played their next game, a 42-40 victory against Tombstone on the 14th. As for St. David, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 53-23 win against The Gregory School on the 17th.
