Cottondale extended their winning streak to five on Thursday, bumping them up to 11-11. Everything went their way against the Liberty County Bulldogs as they made off with a 12-2 win. 12 seems to be a good number for the Hornets as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.
Lane Johnson made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Johnson was also big at the plate, going a perfect 5-for-5 with one home run, five RBI, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Cottondale's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 2-1 (and 9-10 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Cottondale let Conner Barton and Jaydon Gray run wild. Barton got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Gray went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Barton has become a key player for Cottondale: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 5-11 otherwise. Tyler Jones also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Cottondale kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in six consecutive matchups.
As for Liberty County, their defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-17. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss they have suffered against Cottondale since April 17, 2018.
On Liberty County's side, they saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jason Walker, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
Looking ahead, Cottondale will venture away from home to face off against Miller County at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Liberty County, they will square off against Wewahitchka at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
