Softball Recap: Mynderse Academy Wins Going Away Against Newark

The matchup between Mynderse Academy and Newark on Monday hardly resembled the 4-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Blue Devils put the hurt on the Reds with a sharp 17-9 win. The Blue Devils might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by eight runs or more this season.

Isabella Burlew spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mercedes Santana, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. Those six RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Danielle McDermott, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Mynderse Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .560. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Mynderse Academy is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.0 runs over those games. As for Newark, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-9.

Looking ahead, Mynderse Academy will take on Wayne at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Newark, they will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against Whitman at 5:00 p.m.
