High school football: Single-game rushing leaders in all 50 states

By Kevin Askeland Dec 18, 2020, 11:00am

Pennsylvania back Journey Brown is all-time national king with 722 yards.

National high school football rushing leaders Marquis Crosby of Presbyterian Christian (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Jonathon Brooks of Hallettsville (Texas) both crossed the 500-yard threshold in one game this year. But where do Crosby and Brooks rank among the all-time single game rushing records in their respective states?

MaxPreps has compiled the top single-game rushing leaders in each state and while the pair came close in their respective states, each came up short. Jayley Adams of Kossuth owns the top mark in Mississippi with 543 yards while Crosby had 502.

Two players have the record in Texas. Both Matt Gadek of McKinney and Rudy Rudison of Marian Christian each rushed or 599 yards in a single game. Brooks became the 20th player in state history with over 500 yards, rushing for 501 in a playoff win over Loreno.

Journey Brown of Meadville (Pa.) is the top rusher among the state leaders with 722 yards while Paul McCoy of Matewan (W.Va.) is No. 2 with 661 yards.

One name notably missing is John Giannantonio of Netcong (N.J.), who is listed in the National Federation of High Schools Record Book with a 754-yard outing against Mountain Lakes in 1950. However research by Bob Schwalb of the Morristown Daily Record showed in 1999 that Giannantonio's total was for "total offense" and not rushing yardage. Giannantonio's highest single game rushing total was reported by Schwalb as 515 yards. That means Derius Stone of St. Mary (Rutherford) is the state's all-time leader with 577 yards.

Sources for the list include the NFHS record book, state association websites, coaches association record books, the MaxPreps leaderboards and research via Newspapers.com. For any corrections or additions, please e-mail Kevin Askeland at kevinaskeland65@gmail.com.
