Softball Game Preview: Cassadaga Valley Cougars vs. Maple Grove Red Dragons

Cassadaga Valley hasn't had much luck against Maple Grove recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Cougars will face off against the Red Dragons at 4:30 p.m. Maple Grove took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Cassadaga Valley, who comes in off a win.

On Tuesday, Cassadaga Valley needed a bit of extra time to put away Frewsburg. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Bears 8-6. The game was the first time the Cougars have beaten the Bears on their field since May 23, 2019.

Catie Russell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned (and one unearned) runs on 11 hits and racked up eight Ks.

At the plate, Hailey Myers was incredible, going 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Emiley Anderson was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Maple Grove was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss dating back to last season. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 11-9 heartbreaker at the hands of Westfield.

Cassadaga Valley's record is now 2-0. As for Maple Grove, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-3.

Cassadaga Valley couldn't quite finish off Maple Grove in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 9-7. Can the Cougars avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
