Softball Game Preview: La Costa Canyon Mavericks vs. Mission Vista

La Costa Canyon has gone a perfect 4-0 against Mission Vista recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Mavericks will square off against Mission Vista at 4:00 p.m. Mission Vista took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on La Costa Canyon, who comes in off a win.

La Costa Canyon will bounce into Thursday's game after beating Rancho Buena Vista, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mavericks walked away with a 4-1 win over the Longhorns on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for the Mavericks in their matchups with the Longhorns: they've now won three in a row.

Norah Coulsell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Addy Brown was excellent, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Malia Whitehouse, who got three hits from her three at bats.

La Costa Canyon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rancho Buena Vista only posted a batting average of .160.

Meanwhile, Mission Vista didn't have quite enough to beat Carlsbad on Tuesday and fell 3-2.

Rian Hickman was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Hickman was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI. That home run was her first of the season.

Mission Vista's loss dropped their record down to 5-9. As for La Costa Canyon, their win bumped their record up to 11-5-1.

La Costa Canyon was able to grind out a solid victory over Mission Vista in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, winning 4-1. Will the Mavericks repeat their success, or do Mission Vista have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
