Basketball Recap: Seguin Takes a Loss

On Friday, the Seguin Matadors were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 59-58 to the Jefferson Mustangs. While losing is never fun, the Matadors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 888th, while the Mustangs are ranked 382nd).

Despite the loss, Seguin still got an impressive performance from Corey Dailey, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 12 boards. That was a full 46.6% of Seguin's points, marking the seventh time in a row he's posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Cameron Juarez-Bruns, who put up six points.

Even though they lost, Seguin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in nine consecutive games.

Jefferson's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Trey Perez led the charge by going 5 of 11 on his way to 14 points and five rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Adrien Reyna, who had 12 points and four blocks.

Seguin's defeat dropped their record down to 7-10. As for Jefferson, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season.

Seguin didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-47 win against Edna on the 27th. As for Jefferson, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 55-38 victory against Edison on the 28th.
