Baseball Recap: Cherryville Drops Highest Score of Season Against Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cherryville). They blew past the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Gryphons 18-0 on Tuesday. The Ironmen might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five matches by seven runs or more this season.

Brock Bumgardner made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Furthermore, he didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent since back in April of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Talon Dalton was incredible, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Bryson Withers, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

Cherryville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .628. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Cherryville is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy and nudges their season record down to 1-6.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cherryville will challenge Lincolnton at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The timing is sure in Cherryville's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while Lincolnton has been banged up by three consecutive losses on the road.
