Basketball Recap: Olivia Secord's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Vanlue over Elgin

Vanlue was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They fell 64-51 to the Elgin Comets. The Wildcats lost against the Comets in their previous head to head back in January of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 59-24 score last time.

Vanlue lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Olivia Secord, who went 6 for 14 on her way to 14 points in addition to seven boards and six steals. Secord is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 27 games she's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Adrienne Phillips, who posted 19 points along with five assists and five steals.

Even though they lost, Vanlue was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Maycee Muselin was her usual excellent self, going 11 of 25 on her way to 30 points in addition to seven boards and six assists for Elgin. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Wall, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine boards.

Vanlue's loss dropped their record down to 4-7. As for Elgin, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 8-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Vanlue will head out to square off against Calvert at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Calvert will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something Vanlue surely won't give up without a fight. As for Elgin, they will venture away from home to challenge Ridgemont at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
